Shawn is a Fire Service Instructor with Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids. He brings over 20 years of occupational safety and health experience, including 10 years of Fire Department Emergency Services work, to his position.He also served nearly 10 years in the U.S. Military as a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives specialist qualified to detect biological weapons.
In addition to working with us and Mid-State Technical College, Shawn works as an Assistant Chief at the Biron Fire Department. Shawn’s impressive background has given him practical, hands-on training and experience in incident command, emergency services, hazardous materials, and occupational safety.
Shawn is responsible for leading our Training Division, ensuring our members meet the requirements set forth by the State of Wisconsin and our Fire District. Shawn believes it’s crucial to teach students how training and safety standards relate to real-world responses to accidents and how bridging the gap between the classroom and the working environment can save lives.
His passion for helping people in life-threatening situations is evident in his long and successful career in the emergency services industry. Shawn believes every life saved is a gift because each one has a purpose and should be cherished and protected above all other endeavors. He has touched so many lives by deploying his skills in the service of strangers that the long hours, demanding work, and time spent away from his friends and family to develop his expertise and remain in the field seem like a small sacrifice when compared to the self-imposed sense of duty and obligation every person has to give back to the world.
Shawn was born and raised in Nekoosa, WI. He graduated from Kaplan University in 2016 with an Associate of Science degree in Fire Science and is in the process of completing the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Fire Administration from Columbia Southern University. He has completed multiple IFSAC and ProBoard certification courses in Firefighting, Fire Inspector, Hazardous Materials, Emergency Services, Fire Officer, Incident Safety Officer, and Traffic Incident Management Technician. He’s also an American Heart Association Instructor, American Red Cross Instructor and a former Authorized OSHA Outreach Instructor.
